THE CORNING MUSEUM OF GLASS

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Finger Lakes Wine Country region of New York, The Corning Museum of Glass is the world’s largest museum devoted entirely to the art, history and science of glass. Housed in a collection of modern glass architecture, and featuring more than 45,000 objects spanning 35 centuries, the Museum’s collections offer a unique experience for visitors of all ages to look at glass in a whole new light.
The Glass Collection Galleries: From Ancient Egyptian Relics to Contemporary Art in Glass
Glass
Collection Galleries show the most comprehensive and celebrated
glass collection in the world. The galleries tell the story of glass
creation, from a full-scale model of an Egyptian furnace to the grand
factories of Europe, and, then America, and finally, to the small-scale
furnaces that fueled the American Studio Glass movement that began in
1962. The galleries showcase objects representing every country and
historical period in which glassmaking has been practiced.
Glass Innovations: Changing the World through Glass
Glass changes the world—see how in our award-winning, state-of-the-art,
interactive science and technology exhibit called the Innovation
Center. Do It! stations let you bend light, bend glass and bend
your imagination.
Live Glassmaking Shows
The Hot Glass Show,
a 15–20 minute performance, is presented at The Corning Museum
of Glass seven days a week throughout the day. On a stage floating above
a working glass factory, master glassmakers take gobs of molten glass
(as hot as lava) and turn them into beautiful bowls, vases and more.
Cameras inside the 2300°F furnace make sure you don’t miss
a detail.
The Studio: Make Your Own Glass
Inspired by the Museum’s glass collection, visitors can make their
own glass souvenirs at the Museum’s premier glassworking school,
The Studio. Guests as young as three can participate in 40-minute
Make Your Own Glass experiences, all day, every day.
Interested in a more in-depth exploration of glassmaking? Instructors
from the United States and abroad teach at The
Studio, sharing their insight and wisdom. Students at The Studio
range in experience from beginning to advanced, fueled by their passion
and desire to create.
A Collection of Modern Glass Architecture
The campus of The Corning Museum of Glass is a unique collection of modern glass architecture. The Museum’s buildings have been influenced by three distinct generations of architects, all of whom shared the goal of creating a fluid space and incorporating glass wherever possible.
The effect is powerful. In 2007, the public voted The Corning Museum of Glass as number 136 on a list of America’s 150 favorite buildings, in a poll conducted by the The American Institute of Architects.
The Museum features architecture by:
- Harrison & Abramowitz
- Gunnar Birkerts
- Smith-Miller + Hawkinson
- Bohlin Cywinski Jackson
The Rakow Research Library
